What is a Cavity?

A cavity is a process of tooth decay that begins with damage to the tooth enamel and gradually progresses deeper into the tooth. The main causes of cavities include poor oral hygiene, frequent consumption of sugary foods, accumulation of bacteria, and neglecting regular dental check-ups. If left untreated, a cavity can cause severe pain, infection, and even tooth loss.

Symptoms of a cavity include:

• White or dark spots on the tooth
• Tooth sensitivity to cold, hot, or sweet foods
• Pain while chewing
• Bad breath (halitosis)

Stages of Cavities

Cavities develop gradually, and early detection significantly simplifies the treatment process. Depending on the severity of the damage, there are 4 main stages of cavities: initial, superficial, medium, and deep cavity.

Initial Cavity – The earliest stage, where a white or slightly yellowish spot appears on the tooth enamel. At this stage, the tooth is not deeply damaged and usually causes no pain.

Superficial Cavity – The damage spreads inside the enamel. A small cavity or dark spot may appear on the tooth. Sensitivity to cold, hot, or sweet stimuli may occur. Superficial cavities require professional dental treatment, but the procedure is relatively simple and painless.

Medium Cavity – The decay reaches the dentin (the inner layer of the tooth). Symptoms become more noticeable. If left untreated, the infection can spread quickly. Treatment involves removing the infected tissue and placing a filling.

Deep Cavity – The most severe stage, when the decay reaches close to or affects the tooth nerve (pulp). This stage causes intense pain. Deep cavities can lead to inflammation, infection, and eventual tooth loss.

Cavity Treatment at Home

It is impossible to treat a cavity at home. However, prevention is highly effective. It is essential to brush your teeth properly and regularly with fluoride toothpaste, use dental floss daily, and reduce the consumption of sugary products. Regular dental visits are also crucial for early diagnosis and timely treatment.

Treatment at the initial stage is relatively simple and affordable, while deep cavities may require additional procedures.
